For our second big project we are taking apart and measuring a real life item and putting it into Rhino! I was super stoked when I heard of this and was sure I'd think of something super cool I could build in Rhino and then change and print and it would be amazing! However... I can not think of the perfect item. I am very sad. I'm sure this project will end and it will pop into my head. Here are my contenders as well as their pros and cons:
1: Large Butterfly Clip
This was in a gift bag from a secret santa this year. Not really my style but adjacent.
PROS:
-If I modelled it in rhino, I could change it into all sorts of cool crazy custom clips I could print out!
CONS:
-The springy bit being hard to like reuse irl if this wound up getting fabricated irl.
-Kinda simple
-I'd have to break it to get it apart, just the end of the pin that holds it together. I don't really care though, as I'd never wear it like this.
2: A (new) Mousetrap
We have a lot of these around, but I think we finally got all the mice.
PROS: Being able to make weird large decorative mousetraps? Also imagine printing a mold to case ceramic mousetraps that break once you set them off, that's interesting.
CONS:
-Same issue with the springy bit
-Also maybe too simple
3 & 4: One of these two flashlights
These come apart in many different ways, and I will always have a backup if I do one of them
PROS:
-Hopefully not too complicated
-Flashlight nerds online like to customize and switch out parts so hopefully if I mess something up putting them back together there's online help?
-If I break something, parts are interchangeable so I can get another of that one thing.
CONS:
-Can't actually print a new casing since they get super hot if on high for a time (I know, that's not the point of the assignment)
-How far do I have to take these things apart?
It was from my old roommates uncle Larry. It was sweet until it stopped working.
PROS
-It doesn't work so I can't break it
-Maybe it'll work after?
-Imagine if it worked after and I printed it a transparent coloured plastic outside like Y2K electronics that'd be AMAZING
CONS
-What 1970s dust bunny horrors are inside?
-Is it too complicated?
-What if it IS fixable and I'm just making it worse (hence why it's lived all this time in the toolbox haha)
Anyways, I hope that after tomorrows class and talking with people I have an idea. This feels like the type of assignment where usually I have a ton of ideas and other people come in like "duhh.... I dunno" and I'm thinking, what? What do you mean you don't know how can you not have any ideas that's insane, only now its ME that has no clue. What is going on in my brain for real.
